So, you may ask, where on earth did this idea come from? Or how did this charity even start? It all ends with one answer…
Introducing Waddo - also known as Cheyne Waddingham
~ Founder of Charlie’s Run for Kids
Our story
Charlie’s Run for Kids (CR4K) was founded in 2013 by Charlotte Carr and Cheyne Waddingham, driven by a profound act of kindness and determination. While undergoing cancer treatment in 2012, Charlie noticed that children in the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Paediatric Oncology ward needed more arts and crafts to brighten their days. Inspired to make a difference, she set out to raise $10,000 to provide these much-needed supplies.
To help Charlie achieve her goal, Cheyne committed to running 150km from Seals Rocks to Whitebridge if his friends contributed the final $2,000 needed…Crazy right?! Charlie’s fundraising goal was reached swiftly but Cheyne decided to complete the run anyway, honoring the support and generosity of the community. That year, the initiative raised over $39,000, significantly benefiting the Paediatric Oncology department at JHCH.
And so it continues…
Tragically, Charlie lost her battle with cancer in 2015. Despite the loss, it became clear that continuing her mission was a fitting tribute to her enduring spirit.
With a deep respect for Charlie’s legacy and Cheyne’s dedication, CR4K has continued to thrive, now entering its 12th year. Our mission remains steadfast; to support the Paediatric Oncology department at JHCH and assist families facing the challenges of cancer.
Our vision at Charlie’s Run for Kids is to continue to provide financial support, friendship, love, and hope, to children and their families battling childhood cancer. We love you Charlie <3
